Baby Fish

A few weeks ago we bought each boy a platy fish. One Saturday I noticed what I thought was a bug in the tank. On closer inspection it was a baby fish! We were so excited. The first night we just counted the one, the next day we saw two. This morning I counted 7! Sadly our mama fish died. When I told the pet store guy this he said she was probably "bound." It's basically when the fish can't deliver all the fry she's carrying. I learned that the fish can have up to 35 fry and it can take half a month to deliver all of them. I'm grateful she stopped at 7. There might be more but we'll have to wait and see. The fry are small and transparent. Oddly our other two fish have been non active since the fry were born. Not sure if they're dealing with things well. Oh and I should point out that it's unlikely that our fish got pregnant while we had them. She probably was already pregnant when we bought her. But we have confirmed that one of the fish is male and that the remaining fish is female. So we'll see if we continue in this fish breeding business.

Wow! How cool to learn all of that! And I bet your kids are thrilled. How fun to watch them grow!
